how to reinvent yourselfLife is always happening and with life happening, so comes changes. Many of us dislike change. We like to stay in our comfort zones and keep the status quo. But are you really living life to its fullest when you resist change and stay in your comfort zone all of the time? I doubt it. To be more open to change, you need to learn how to reinvent yourself.

I’ve had to reinvent myself many times. In the sixth grade, I decided to stop attending public school and headed off to private school. Same thing again when I graduated and headed off to college. I’ve even had to reinvent myself in the working world as well. All along the way, I’ve used the same methods to get through the changing times. Below are the steps I used for you to reference when you want to learn how to reinvent yourself.

How To Reinvent Yourself

Before I jump into each step, realize that you can use the steps for how to reinvent yourself in any area of life and at any time. They are not restricted to career changes, though most people will use them for just that.

How To Reinvent Yourself: Step #1 – Use Your Strengths

We all have certain things that we are good at. Some of us are great conversationalists while others can make people laugh. Understand what your strengths are and take advantage of them when you are in the midst of a change in life. When I was looking for a career change, I knew a strength of mine is with numbers so I took an accounting job. It was a great job that allowed me to work with my strength, working with numbers. This provided me some comfort while I became more comfortable with the other aspects of the career change.

How To Reinvent Yourself: Step #2 – Find Your Passion

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but it is important that you find what you are passionate about in life. When you find something you love, it is always fun and never feels like work. When I began to write for this blog and others, I fell in love with it. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been making many updates to the sites I own and have worked roughly 70 hour weeks. Not once did I dislike what I was doing. In fact, I kept working on it, not wanting to take a break. I have never been in a situation before where I didn’t want or need to take a break from something. Finding your passion takes work, but it is well worth it in the end.

How To Reinvent Yourself: Step #3 – Be Willing To Take A Step Back

The goal in life is to always move forward. But sometimes, we need to step back in order to get what we want. For me, I had to take a step back when leaving public school for private school. I knew the private school would provide me with a much better education, but I had to leave and give up close friends. I was willing to take this step back in order to move forward in life.

When it comes to your career, when you find your passion, you will have to step back many times. You may have the skills and expertise in an area that is completely opposite of your passion. As a result, you won’t be finding a job with a comparable paycheck. This is OK. Remember, when you follow your passion, it doesn’t feel like work. You will be more energized and excited to work, allowing for you to grow that much more quickly.

How To Reinvent Yourself: Step #4 – Be Mindful of Others Opinions

When you chase your dreams, many people will be there to question you. When I was headed to private school and would tell others, they all had the same question for me: “What about your friends?” If I had a dime for every person that asked me that question, I’d be rich right now. This question was coming from everyone – adults and kids alike – and I was only 12 at the time! My answer was always, the same: I’ll make new friends. And that is what I did.

I do my best to not let others opinions impact my dreams. Yes I listen to their concerns because some people do have valid concerns. But in most cases, the fear that people project on you for chasing your dream is their fear trying to stop you. Listen to your gut, not the naysayers.

How To Reinvent Yourself: Step #5 – Have A Supporting Cast

When I mentioned above that I listen to other peoples concerns, most times, it is the concerns from my supporting cast. I have a close network of a few friends and family members that I rely on for support. These people are ones that have followed their dreams and will provide me with unbiased advice. If you want to reinvent yourself, you will need to have a support cast of people you can rely on. The cast may be small – in my case, it involves less than 5 people. But the advice of these 5 people is invaluable to me.

Final Thoughts

If you follow these 5 steps on how to reinvent yourself, you will be miles ahead of the game. Life changes will be much easier for you to handle and you may actually begin looking forward to changes. Remember, life changes are a good thing. When we stretch out of our comfort zone, we grow as individuals. Yes, there are times that we will fail, but that is a part of growing. Be the best you can be and grow. Don’t be satisfied with the status quo.
